Natural Ingredients for Healthy Hair

Natural Ingredients for Healthy Hair

Although technology has given us hair products and conditioners that promote healthy hair, it does come with a cost, as many of the products contain chemicals that will harm the hair over a period of time. This is one reason why many people are turning to natural ingredients for hair care, and there is a long list of things that Mother Nature provides to help keep our hair healthy.

Olive Oil

The Mediterranean region is living proof of the health values of olive oil, and for many generations, the Greeks and Italian people used olive oil liberally in their cuisine, and they have the lowest rate of heart disease in the world. Olive oil is a great nourisher for hair, adding shine, resilience and softness, and is best applied by massaging warm oil into the scalp for at least 5 minutes, then cover your hair with a shower cap and leave it for 30–40 minutes to really soak into the hair follicles, followed by normal shampooing.

Avocado

This exotic fruit is a great tonic for dry skin or damaged hair, and eating avocado daily will give you a good supply of Vitamin E, which is essential for healthy hair and nails. Another great way to nourish your hair using avocado is to make a hair mask with one ripe avocado and a tablespoonful of olive oil, mixed with a liberal portion of natural yoghurt. Apply the mask to damp hair and massage it into the scalp, after that, wear a shower cap for one hour to give the mask time to do its work.

Green Tea

Aside from being a delicious and healthy drink, green tea is very good for the hair. The tea has a high concentration of antioxidants, which promote healthy hair and skin growth, and green tea is said to have properties that inhibit hair loss. Brew 3–4 cups of green tea (a little more if you have very long hair) and allow it to cool before pouring the tea onto your damp hair. Leave it for ten minutes and then wash your hair with a mild shampoo. If the process is repeated 2 or 3 times a week, it will encourage hair growth, and your hair will have natural sheen.

Lemons

This citrus fruit is very medicinal for hair, skin and nails, and is full of essential nutrients. For best results with hair, mix the juice from two lemons with a cup of warm water, and rinse this on your hair after a regular shampoo. Wait 5 minutes before rinsing with water, and 2 or 3 times a week is the ideal frequency.

Coconut Oil

Science has discovered that coconut oil has many beneficial properties, and it is recognised as being one of the best moisturisers for hair. The oil penetrates deep into the hair shafts and provides essential moisture, much of which is lost with various hair treatments and direct sunlight. Massage coconut oil into your hair just before you go to bed, and wearing a shower cap will keep your pillow case clean. The oil will slowly work its way into the hair follicles overnight and in the morning, shampoo your hair as normal. Once or twice a week will see a noticeable difference in the natural shine of your hair.
